Developing Your Skill

There are a number of techniques you can use to begin developing your ability further.

Meditating with the cards

Some readers like to meditate with the cards and try to "enter" them. Meditate in your usual way and let your mind go, visualise yourself going through the border of the card and see where your journey takes you. Note down any results you have from this experience.

Sleep with a card under your pillow

This is a technique which Tarot reader Ellesse recommends, especially for new students to Tarot. If you are stuck on a particular card's meaning, put it under your pillow and sleep with it there for a night. Ask mentally to be shown the card's meaning for you. As a result, you should have some quite vivid dreams so in the morning write them down and pay particular attention to how you were feeling in the dream, the people you met, conversations that took place etc. The card's meaning and any hidden messages for you will become clearer.

Journalling

This is where you can really start to become familiar with your own deck. Journalling is basically drawing daily cards for yourself, noting them down and then comparing results. Soon you will begin to get a really good feel for what each card means based on your own personal experience.

Read the images, not the book!

Easier said than done at the beginning we know! But take the plunge, offer to read for somebody other than yourself, put your book away and just look at the cards you have spread. Whatever your first impression is, say it - don't stop yourself and begin over-analysing. You will be surprised how your intuition takes over.

Make Your Own Cards

Card making. The idea of making your own cards is inspiring and also terrifying, and crosses the mind of every Tarot reader at least once when you look at a deck and think "Hmmm, I could do MUCH better than that!"

There are a lot of plus points for making your own deck, there will never again be that confusion again as to what a card means. You are the one responsible for putting the symbols and imagery onto it, you know what you wanted it to represent.

Take some time to research and put some thought into what you want your cards to say back to you.

A good image programme or photo editor such as PaintShop Pro or Photoshop can help you with the imaging and then all you need is some good quality card and get them laminated.  Card making is very rewarding!
