Fortune Telling with Dominoes

Just to prove the adage that you can read the past, present or future with just about everything, we would like to show you today how to read dominoes.

As with other games such as playing cards, it is possible to use this childhood favourite (who did not have a wooden box of games that included the trusty dominoes?) as a useful and very simple divination tool.  Who would have thought that when we finally trounced our Grandad, we could have read his future for him at the same time!

Origin of Dominoes

It is perhaps not surprising that you can use the humble dominoe for fortune telling when you realise it originated from dice.  Just as when we roll the dice, we putting our future in the hands of Lady Luck or fate.  Spreading dominoes is in effect spreading dice.

A standard set of dominoes features every possible roll of a set of two dice.

There is some dispute about where dominoes actually originated from, some say Egypt and Arabia but the most widely believed country of origin is China.  They made their first appearance in Europe in the early 18th century and have been a favourite parlour game ever since.

How to Read Dominoes

This is one of the simplest methods of divination.  Each dominoe has a set meaning (although you can, as with any form of divination, let your intuition take you where it will) and therefore reading them causes no confusion at all.

We will cover two ways of reading the dominoes, a weekly reading and a general reading.

Weekly Reading

Place the full set of dominoes face down on a flat, large surface (a table is good because the dominoes will slide easily) and give them a good shuffle.  The easiest way of shuffling dominoes is to simply swirl them around your surface, mixing them up very well.

Then, select one domino to represent the coming week.  More than one person can get involved in this reading too, so if there is more than one of you who wants a reading, each person picks one domino.  The domino you pick will give the trend of the coming week, based on the standard meanings belows:
