Some spreads will say you need a Significator card. A Significator is pretty much as it sounds, it is a card chosen by the reader to represent a person, either yourself or the subject of your reading. The Court cards are usually the preferred cards for Significators and are chosen on appearance, character and age.
Many people choose not to use a Significator because it takes a card out of the deck manually that could be needed in the reading itself. It is not a strict science and comes down to personal preference. Personally, we do not believe they are needed, if the question you have asked is framed correctly, there will be no confusion with the deck as to who the reading is for and/or about.
I have drawn the Death card - Does this mean physical death?
Most newcomers to Tarot fear the Death card more than any other and dread him appearing in their spreads. However, once you have been using the cards for a while, you'll come to realise that there are far worst cards in the pack than Death and the Grim Reaper is not such a bad fellow to appear for you!
The Death card symbolises change; necessary and/or natural endings. That is why he has a scythe on most depictions, he is clearing out all the old stuff to make way for new. People in general are very resistant to change, so at the time these changes don't always FEEL like they are the best thing for us. But they usually ARE and turn out to be very positive in the end. And we are not talking about physical death, a good example is the ending of a relationship that hasn't been so great. You know deep down it needs to end, but also it's going to be a bit upsetting for a while. But if it doesn't end, how can you meet Mr Right who is waiting a little further down the road for you? Do you see - out with the old, in with the new.
It’s also important to remember that Tarot cards deal with smaller, more mundane problems. We always think there is a huge big issue coming when we see cards like this but here's a good example of where the cards deal with everyday subjects.
If you were thinking of quitting smoking - the Death card could turn up here as well. It's still a pretty life changing decision, but it's not something to worry about.
More often than not, it just means change and change comes in many shapes and forms. And the Death card clears the way for a nice fresh start, wherever you may need it in your life.
